As writing code will no longer be the bottleneck, Rajan believes that the next big opportunity for engineers would be to step into more strategic functions (spanning from planning to execution) and design better systems, with AI in the loop.

Rajan says Rovo Dev wasn't perfect from day one. But by measuring "developer joy" and listening to internal pushback, Atlassian evolved the product around transparency, control, and real developer needs — going beyond automation.

Rajan says powerful AI agents should be deployed to production only when there's clear human ownership and a way to track, monitor, and steer the system's behavior, creating an accountability layer that moves as fast as the AI itself.

Despite the coding skills of AI agents, Rajan remains positive that SaaS tools aren't going anywhere. In fact, if anything, he believes these tools will get stronger, with AI working across projects and controls by tapping contextual insights.
